How To Play the Ultimate Racing Board Game

How To Play the Ultimate Racing Board Game

Posted by Mark Haskins on

The Lacorsa board game is a fast, family-friendly racing game that Formula One fans will love. It’s a thrilling 20-minute race for track dominance. It’s easy to learn, yet each lap reveals new strategies and fun surprises.

You’re not trying to reach the end of the board; your goal is to outsmart your opponents and stay ahead! Cars move based on the cards you play, making it a resource-management challenge. The deck includes cards numbered 1 to 12, plus a Redline Card that boosts any card by 2. A 12 becomes a 14, the highest speed possible!

The 1, 2, and 3 cards are Extend Cards, crucial for creating gaps that help you hold your lead. To catch up, another car must have one of these cards to close the gap.

Parc Fermé

Lacorsa can be played by 4, 5, or 6 players, each running a single car. With two or three players, each controls two cars, creating a strategic challenge unique to the Lacorsa Grand Prix Game. Here, you become your own team principal, orchestrating your cars to work together or sacrificing one to secure victory.

For each car starting the race, use a full suit of cards. For six cars, use six suits. Shuffle thoroughly, deal all the cards, and prepare for a wild mix of good, bad, and unbalanced hands. You must maximize your finishing position regardless.

Qualifying for the Starting Grid

To start, we must qualify. Each player sets their starting position by selecting a card and placing it on top of their other cards. All cars reveal their qualifying cards simultaneously. If you are using a Redline Card, show it first, then a second card.

Position the cars on the board with the lowest score at the back and the remaining cars directly on the spaces ahead. Use the die to break ties during qualifying, so even the highest score isn’t guaranteed pole position.

Set Your Strategy

Qualifying cards are discarded. Now, evaluate your grid spot. Did you get more or less than you expected from qualifying? You will have to manage the rest of your cards throughout the race.

Lights Out and Away We Go!

The race starts from the back, with the last-placed car challenging the car ahead for position. Each car plays a card in a War-like battle, and the highest card wins. The winner takes the spot, and the loser’s turn ends. The victor then challenges the next car. This process, proceeding from back to front, constitutes one lap.

If a car passes two cars, its turn is over. Play then moves to the next car ahead.

Creating A Gap by Extending

When the race reaches the first two cars, the winner can move ahead by playing a 1 or 2 Extend card. This creates a gap the others must close before attacking. If the winner doesn’t have a 1 or 2, they discard. Either way, this move ends their turn and the lap. The next lap begins with the last-place car. The race continues with more laps until someone runs out of cards.

When we reach the battle for second place, the winner can extend into the space ahead using a 1, 2, or the 3 Drafting Extend card. Everyone behind the leader can use this extra card to extend, increasing the chance the leader gets caught before the finish.

The last lap is triggered when someone runs out of cards. Track your competitors' remaining cards to time your strategy perfectly.

If a car has one card left on its turn, it will defend its position with its last card. Even if it wins that challenge, its turn ends, and play moves to the car ahead. The last lap ends with the battle for the lead. If you have saved a decent card, you may be able to pass and win the race.

World Championship

Points are awarded based on finishing position (9, 6, 4, 3, 2, 1). We score for both drivers and teams! Thanks to Lacorsa's lightning-fast gameplay, you can chase a full championship season in just a few hours. When six players each have a car, splitting into teams ramps up the fun and strategy. Here, the team championship fosters collaboration; rivalries among teammates can add extra spice, as clashes might hurt your team’s chances.

The Lacorsa 1962 Expansion and More

The wildly popular two-car format inspired us to create the Expansion, adding more cars and suits so you can have up to 6 team principals. More cars on track mean longer, more adrenaline-pumping races! In the Expansion, pit stops become strategic gambits with a five-card draw from the discard pile, letting you time your pit stop perfectly based on the cards played so far. Plus, Track Cards introduce unique house rules for each race, like Monaco’s limit of one pass per lap, intensifying the qualifying battle. At the Italian GP at Monza, instead of ending your turn after extending, you can pass one more car, sending shivers down the leader’s spine as the cars swap position effortlessly. At the Belgian GP, crashes can turn the race on its head, with cars losing track position or even ending your race with a DNF.

The Expansion race car sets add seasonal car performance, featuring a new livery, a track card, and specs for each car. It makes every race a nostalgic yet electrifying challenge.

Experience the adrenaline rush of this unique racing game—where speed, clever strategy, and intense competition ignite the spirit of motorsports for experts and first-timers alike. Welcome to the Lacorsa Grand Prix Game!
